Variant by Robison Wells Book Review

Variant by Robison Wells.
Book Review by Cindy.
Book Summary: Benson Fisher thought that a scholarship to Maxfield Academy would be the ticket out of his dead-end life.
He was wrong.
Now he's trapped in a school that's surrounded by a razor-wire fence. Aschool where video cameras monitor his every move. Where there are no adults. Where the kids have split into group in order to survive.
Where breaking the rules equal death.
But when Benson stumbles upon the school's real secret, he realizes the playing by the rules could spell a fate worse than dearth, and that escape - his only real nope for survival - may be impossible.

Cindy's Summary:I heard Variant was pretty good. Whoever said it wasn't wrong, but Variant is surprisingly a lot like The Maze Runner by James Dashner. I mean, the characters are both trapped and couldn't get out with no adults anywhere and kids have leaders to lead the group. Both main characters, Benson and Thomas wants to escape their prison and both prison sends down needs through a closet or box of them sort. Both prisons are used for experimenting. There's romance, adventure, and determination. Except, Variant have three different groups that goes against each other instead of one large group ruled by one leader like The Maze Runner. They also different settings: Variant takes place at a closed-up school while The Maze Runner takes place at a cave-like thing. Benson also have his memory. So yep. Basically this kind of sums up my summary without repeating the book's summary. Well, there's a part where Benson finds out the girl he hangs out with and become friends with benefits with is actually an android.

Rate: (1-10): 8.8

So let's see, I kind of see a love triangle going on in the ending. I mean, Jane, the android girlfriend isn't actually dead and Benson escaped with Becky. So, whose Benson going to chose? Well, for once, I actually want Benson (the guy/girl) with Becky (the 2nd boy/girl) instead of Jane (the 1st boy/girl). In all the other love triangles, I wanted the boy/girl with their 1st love for some reason. I hope I'm not biased because Jane is an android, but Becky is like more gentle and I don't know, even though her authority was way higher than Benson's, she's actually nice and talks to Benson.

Some examples I wanted the love triangles with the first boy/girl. So first, The Maze Runner, I really wanted Thomas to end up with Teresa. If you haven't read The Death Cure (The Maze Runner Trilogy #3), I won't tell you who he ended up with. Second, in Matched by Ally Condie, I really want Cassia to end up with Xander. Ky doesn't seem that appealing to me for some reason. I mean, perfect Xander is in front of her, why can't she see that? Then, she have to be all making out with Ky right in front of Xander. Gahh...... The third book, Reached isn't out yet, so I don't know who Cassia ended up with. Third, Delirium or Pandemonium, in this case, had this major cliffhanger triangle, which I already talked in my previous posts, about Lena and Alex. Yep, I really want Lena with Alex. Let's see, there's The Hunger Games. I originally wanted Peeta with Katniss, but everyone is like with the Peeniss crap and fighting over it, so I'm forget this shit, I'll go with Gale instead. Then, after that, I just really didn't care. I can't of any other exciting love triangles, so I'll move on to quotes.

"The fence was probably twelve feet tall, topped with a spool of razor wire, like the kind of repo lots and prisons."
You don't know how right you are, Benson.

" ' We can't get out of here.' "
Oh, Benson, why didn't you just escape then?

" ' We don't have a principal' ..... ' We don't have teachers, and we don't have counselors.' "
Scary school, I would have left just right there.

" Maxfield wasn't just a prison. It hid what it was doing, seeking out students who had no ties, no homes."
 That's like kidnapping....

" 'When people go to detention, they don't come back.' "
 See, their punishment is death.

"I was trapped in a prison, and I had to wear a chip? Were they going to track me?"
Yep.

" 'This school have some problems.' "
 Obviously.

" 'We're not the gang. We're the Society' "
So the Society is the biggest of the three groups and they had chose to listen to whoever is experimenting with them.

" 'You should join Havoc because......' "
Havoc is the second largest group of the three and they're like a gangster group who especially break rules.

" ' We're the Variants' ......'The other two gangs are playing the game.' "
So Benson ended joining the Variants, because Variants is the group that took all the leftovers or who doesn't agree with the two other groups, or just want to escape. Variant is also the smallest group and an interesting fact is that Becky, whose in Society, started the Variant.

" 'At night we lock the closet, and i the morning the new stuff is in there.' "
See, just like in The Maze Runner with the box.

" 'This is our version of high school sports. Paintball, war games, debate chess.' ....'It's like the nerds meet the military.' "
The only game that actually sounds fun is paintball although paintball hurts and could get violent.

"There were dozens of graves, at least."
Yep. There's a graveyard. People die there.

"I had to escape."
 His new determination to escape.

"Things would be different now."
Benson just totally changed the 'school' by showing others about the androids.

" 'I thought you died. I thought we both did.' "
I won't tell you who said it, but it is so confusing. How could she even be alive? There, that was a clue. You probably could already guess who is it.

It think Feedback (Variant Trilogy #2) is out too. I'll see if it's in the library.

Oh. I did say I'll post this tomorrow, but Liana was bothering me about only posting a small paragraph for the week and I already finished the book, so I posted it early. ;) If I finish another book by tomorrow, I can post one tomorrow.
