The Forbidden Sea by Sheila A. Nelson.
Book Summary: When, one stormy night, a mermaid comes to take Adrianne Keynnman's sister, Cecily, down into the depths of the sea, Adrianne knows she must fight with every ounce of her strength to protect her little sister. On land, Adrianne toils away, trying to eke out a living for her mother, sister, and aunt, after a tragic accident stole her father. Now, life takes a strange and frightening turn as Adrianne's dreams are filled with the mermaid's singing.
When it becomes clear that it isn't Cecily the mermaid wants, Adrianne wonders how she can protect her family from their superstitious island community as the mermaid attempts to lure her into the sea, night and day.
In this powerful tale of heartache and redemption, a girl born on land must choose between the promise of an underwater paradise and her loyalty to those she loves.
Cindy's Summary: They forgot the most important part of the story. That is the person who leads to what Adrianne's decision is. To stay underwater as a princess living in paradise or living on land, doing hard work and suffering her aunt's wrath, but living with her love ones. Since it was all summarized, I might as well skip all the repetitions I'm going to say.
I've got to say, from the summary the book gives us, it doesn't sound that interesting. It actually made me cry a few times. Maybe I'm just an easy-crying person. So, really, while Adrianne gets the blame of losing the family's money and gets teased by village boys of her short hair and her aunt absolutely just hates her, she works night and day for the family's money while her younger sister gets spoiled. Seriously, I cried for her that time.
Anyways, because I'm feeling bored. And LAZY. I'll just do the quotes now.
"Her grasp was firm but gentle --- then she jerked, hard."
I've got to say...."OUCH!"
"It had to be Denn Young. He was the only one who called me Adri."
The love of her life appears! I like his name though.
" 'It's taken you an awful long time to recover, Adrianne.' "
Grr....that aunt is horrible.
"Auntie's tone became soft and cajoling in an instant."
Well, it's not like Cecily is a mean person, she cares about her sister but that aunt is just...ahhh..
"What Auntie meant was there wasn't enough for me to have taste."
Adrianne had just starved for three days! And while Cecily is happily eating, Adrianne can't. Seriously, I hate that aunt.
"Not even Denn notice me go."
So Denn is like two years older than Adrianne and he thinks of her as his younger sister. As of now, Denn likes this stuck-up rich, pretty girl called Cora Lynn Dunst. Ugh. Even her name sounds stuck-up.
"....that noble idiot."
That phrase actually sounds like a compliment. Maybe I should start using that now.
"When that day of reckoning came, I took the blame of everything --- and Mama let me."
The mom so weak and stuff, not even protecting her daughter. The mom should be doing the work, not the daughter!!!! Grr...
"I knew why Mother promised the locket to Cecily instead of me."
Even the stupid mother chose Cecily and Adrianne was the one who did everything for her.
"Then she slapped me..."
Ouuu..that aunt!!! But there's a reason and I won't tell you why.
Well, after Liana's blast posts about Delirium and Pandemonium, I have nothing to say, only.
I TOLD YOU IT WAS GOOD!!!
