Cindy's Review:

I've been looking forward to a light, summer read and My Unscripted Life is just the one! 

Yes, it may be those cheesy-ish novels where the protagonist falls in love with a celebrity after going through the "he is a jerk" phase. Next thing you know, the main character will slip into the "he is more sensitive than I thought" phase and slowly see the new light shined upon our love interest. The rest is history. I do not really mind the celebrity/normal person romance because you never know, it can be realistic.....though maybe a lot of the times, it isn't. I mean, look at Emma Watson -- she is dating a non-celeb right?

However, the romance in the novel is a little too insta-love for me. There are initial moments where the main character Dee gets mad at Milo's rude behavior but she definitely gave in to him way too fast. I love the love-hate phase in a fictional relationship, but that lasted about two and half chapters in My Unscripted Life. Like it literally went from "I hate you so much" to "ohhh you're  a decent person" to kissing in the rain within the span of a few chapters. I am not too mad about the romance though, since it is a fun, light read. 

Let's introduce the two main characters:
Dee - The protagonist lives in Georgia, about to start her senior year of high school. She doesn't get into an art program -- and her best friend got into a STEM program -- so she does not have anything to do or anyone to hang out with. Then in comes the movie job ... luckybutt, man I wish I got a summer job like that. Dee honestly does not have that much substance to her; just a young girl who came upon young love. I read these kind of books only to pass time because my summer romance is as dead as dinosaurs. 

Milo - On the other hand, this guy is the opposite of Dee's sweet side. Of course he is a jerk. Aren't all celebrities when you first meet them? And then they become the angel you totally though they were when you truly get to know them. It is sort of understandable to why Milo acts like a jerk, but that's truly all the backstory we get to Milo's personality. Besides being a celebrity and someone who wants to live a "more normal" lifestyle, there is not that much substance to Milo as well. *sigh* This is why I emphasize summer read. Not to diss summer reads, of course, because there are some out there that is really good...but the super emotional ones are in my serious reads pile haha. 

All in all, My Unscripted Life definitely does not contain any heavy, emotional scenes: some melodrama, a potential mean girl, and just the main character revealing her love of art. The whole behind the scenes of a movie set was fun to read about as Dee worked with the items in the background of a movie set. Having watched a lot of behind the scenes to dramas and movie bloopers, I totally have an idea of what Dee is seeing.  

So if you're looking for a novel with cute, romantic scenes and not a lot of depth, My Unscripted Life will work well for you. :)

At a Glance/The Cover: 

So far, I think this book is my favorite of all the Kasie West books. But I have really high hopes for The Fill-in Boyfriend. :) On the Fence is kind of a companion book for The Distance Between Us. There are characters you see in both books, especially Skye. Also, On the Fence took place a little bit after TDBU. 

The Characters/My Opinion:
The storyline for this book is the "I'm in love with my best friend" thing. I love these kind of stories because I like how the main characters already know almost everything about each other. It's cute. I love how they grew up together and shared childhood memories. :) 

Charlie - Charlie is an absolute tomboy. She has 3 older brothers and 1 complimentary one. She's tall, strong, and grew up playing football with her brothers. But she can have a girly side. When she started working at a local mall, she finally got some girlfriends and learned about makeup and checking out boys. But that's when she felt her real feelings for Braden.

Braden - Braden literally sounds like that golden boy that never exists in real life. Charlie described her brothers as hotties, but she obviously can't lust after them because that would be disgusting. Then there's Braden, whose just as hot as the bros, if not even hotter. 

Basically, Charlie and Braden just have to figure out their love life together. The night talks along the fence helps them get even closer, but in a different way. It's cute. They're cute. Everything about this book is cute. Everything Kasie West writes are cute. :) 

Overall Thoughts:
CUTE CUTE CUTE. Looking for a simple, summer read with bubbly romance? On the Fence is definitely a must-read. :)

Book Review: 
The title somewhat has a poetic feel to it. One Song Away kind of makes sense considering that Sophie is an inspiring songwriter. Anyways, fill-in boyfriend? Yep. I think so. I totally love those cliche ideas and things that people will probably never do. Or maybe they do. Not sure. :)

Let's start off with the characters. 
Sophie Claire - a country girl going to the city to make some big bucks. But in this case, she wasn't successful and had to go back home. Okay. Had some bad taste in men along the way. No new besties. And well, no other place to live. I guess. Sophie was a bit intriguing. She didn't really have that much story to her other than being the main character. 

Jake - Of course, the love interest is always more mysterious. Since we don't really know his side of the story to begin with. Jake definitely sounds like a hunk. He's supposed to be model status and all. Jeez. Wonder where all the model status boys of my city went. :D But anyways, ex-best friend of Sophie. Interesting. And she always had a crush on him. And Jake turned out to be even hotter than when he was in high school! Good riddance! Jake is interesting, I guess. Kind of flirty.

I think I liked the idea behind the characters more. The plot of fill-in boyfriends and faking things that turned out to be real. Well, it's always been there for Sophie. So the real question is does Jake want it to be real? Although Sophie keeps on telling herself she won't fall for Jake again,who is she kidding? She was in love him before. He got a hot personality. And the looks. Kind of successful. How can you not fall for that?

Well, I really liked the book just kept on flowing. It wasn't super long, but not too short. Very satisfying. So if you're looking for a fun, quick, new adult read, here's one for you. 

The content is not very explicit. At all. There is one intimate scene. Plus some little romance here and there. I was expecting more since she's probably college age. But otherwise, a fun breezy read!

At a Glance/The Cover:

This is the type of book I love to read. Those carefree, romantic reads for your reading humps during the summer. And Kasie West is exactly the author you would need to find, because she writes a lot of these amazing YA contemporary novels I'm so fond of. 

And jeez. It's a cute cover. :) Everything about the author and the book makes me smile.

The Characters/My Opinion: 

Caymen Meyers - She's an amazing narrator full of humor. She is hilarious and definitely fun to get to know and follow along with. Caymen grew up as a poor girl who lives above her mom's doll shop. Her rich father left her mom and her when she was younger and so her mom Susan dislikes anything rich. Or more like anyone rich. But soon, Caymen meets Xander but can't help but fall for her charm. 

Xander Spence - Of course, it's always the element of boys to make things a little more interesting. At least for me. :) I love nicknames. I think they're actually really special. Or the other way around. Like you have a special dear name for someone special to call you. Okay. Overuse of specials, but Alexander over here was definitely a real charm. He was a fun guy. And honestly, I think he replied to all of Caymen's sarcastic comments really well. So well that they're seriously flirting if this was real life. :D 

So yep, another fun contemporary read. Probably one of my summer rereads when I'm feeling down or when I could use some excitement in my life again. :D 

Overall Thoughts:
I am so glad I found another author to read. An author that writes books just the way I like it and a whole stack of them to read plus more coming!

I CANNOT wait for The Fill-in Boyfriend by Kasie West because *squeals* that sounds SOSOSOSO cute. I just can't help but gush. :D

Discussion: Chick Lit

 

I've always said my favorite genres were dystopian and fantasy, and medieval, and historical fiction, and etc.

But I really didn't realize how much I love chick lit. 

They make great stand alones.

They make great summer reads.

I also didn't realize how much names I have for them.

I call them my fresh air,

my romance stories,

my summer reads of course,

my contemporary books,

my YAs,

my road trips,

my read-once-and-forgets

etc.

In other words, I go to chick lits when I'm feeling bored, down, lonely, tired, or when I'm in a book funk.

You all had those periods when you just can't seem to find a book that would interest you, right? 

When that happens, I go to my chick lits.

They're romantic. And I love those books when I'm reading them. Those are also the kind of books I tend to read and forget about.

Most of the time.

There are some I can't seem to forget.

Either way, my point is if you're getting tired of too much dystopian....well, if you just been reading dystopian after dystopian after dystopian, you can read them chick lits.

Another thing I like about them is that they can go in any direction.

The plots can be all different.

It can be a road trip.

It can be school drama.

It can be about friends.

About parties.

About first love.

 
 

About meeting someone.

SO SO MUCH.

And there's romance.

To me, there is no good book without romance.

I'm talking about the cute ones.

Cuz I ain't that horny yet. LOL. JK.

Except for the middle grade adventures.

I enjoy those too.

But even those have romances nowadays.
 

Okay. This post was entirely a rant.

But hope I don't sound too lost.

And I hope I actually make sense.

Because once I start typing paragraphs, I make absolutely no sense....according to everyone I'm texting.
 

Either way, some GOOOD GOOOD chick lits to start on.

Okay. This may sound bad. BUT I THINK THEY'RE CHICK LIT. CUZ I ASSUME THEY'RE CHICK LIT. CUZ THEY FIT UNDER MY SUMMER READS. AND MY YA ROMANCES. AND MY FRESH AIRS. SO JUST ASSUME THEY'RE CHICK LIT. Cuz they might not be. Whoops. Tell me if they're aren't or I'm probably gonna be really embarrassed.

Anna and the French Kiss

Thoughts: I'm totally in love with Etienne. Every time I read this book, I can fall in love with him all over again. Despite the 'not that tall' aspect, he is so so so perfect. I just can't. 

And Anna is hilarious. I love Anna. Just do.

Yeah. I definitely read this book when I'm bored. I know I title sounds sooo cheesy. But there's a lot of chemistry. And totally clean. No dirtiness. Not that I mind. 

My Life Next Door

by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Thoughts: Another book with a cute boy. Yes, it's the 'I fell in love with my neighbor' kind. I also love the 'I fell in love with my best guy friend' types. CUZ that is so so cute. I envy them.

Anyways, this also is an awesome contemporary on my 'summer read' list. Hope ya'll enjoy this one.

 

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

I doubt my mom would let me go on a road trip. Plus I have school. And summer school. To get ahead with my classes. So I can take AP and all next year. Ugh. Yeah, I'm living the nerd status. Gotta loosen up. LOL. That's why I read. :) 

Fangirl

Okay. Moving on. Levi. That guy right there. :) I want to meet someone like him when I go to college. It's #Stanford. Cuz that's where all the hot nerds go. Right? Haha.

Book Review: Shadowlands by Kate Brian

Cindy's Review: 
At A Glance/The Cover:
I got this book as from the library for this Teen Summer Reading Program prize thing. Some of the books doesn't look that interesting there so I wasn't expecting too much for this book. The teaser in the back didn't sound that amusing and interesting, so I put off this book for awhile. It wasn't as bad as I thought though. There's actually romance and everything.

The book mentioned that Rory had blond hair, but in the cover the girl has brown hair. Well. That always happen. 

And truly, the cover portrayed the title pretty well. Shadowlands. Crows often means bad luck and the clouds or mists in the background does create a dark, shadowy environment. 

The Characters/My Opinion:
Rory Miller - So the main character was victim to a serial killer, who was pretending to be her math teacher. I was kind of scary. And really gothic. Considering I just finished writing an on-prompt essay for my English final about the gothic elements of "Frankenstein", I was really surprised when the first 10 pages was running away from a serial killer. Right there, you have the elements of Pursued Protagonist, Entrapment, Suspense, Pursuit of the Heroin, and Revenge.  

So yes, the beginning was very action-packed. 

Steven Nell - He is the serial killer. I'm not sure if he's human though, because apparently, he can smell fear. I thought he was a demon or something but there was never proof about it throughout the whole book. Steven did have some POV in the book. Only about two pages long and once in a while, so he gave us insight on where he actually is and what he is doing. So we get dramatic irony from him. 

The action kind of starting slowing down in towards the middle. Rory; Darcy, her sister; and her Dad had to enter a witness program to Juniper Landing where it's totally a rich place and safe. It kind of gets confusing when you get to the end. Like I was surprised at the ending that I was kind of suspecting, but if you think back at it, how did Steven even get to Juniper Landing?

It's more of a theory how everything happened and why it happened. The title definitely gives a clue. So the reader can kind of imagine what happened on their own. 

Final Thoughts:
The conclusion was well thought out. I truly like that tiny twist there. And no cliffhangers. That's great! I kind of wish this was a stand-alone because ending the book like that would be great. I don't like how the second book creates a whole new problem and then they have make the third book solve it. Why not just make this a stand-alone?

This book was recommended to me by the Goodreads brain computer thingy. And since the cover was so cute. :) And it sounded like a great romantic novel. And there were so much great reviews. Although there was one where the reader tried to read it three times already and still DNF. I have no idea why, because I definitely finished this book in one sitting. BECAUSE, IT'S SO LOVELY. AND CUTE. OH. I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK. 

Yes. Definitely on my summer reads list. I think I really should start creating this list. Hmmm. 

The Characters/My Opinions: 
Amy Curry - Amy is totally short for Amelia. I really had nothing against her name. I just thought it was quite common but I moved on. Really. Amy suffered through a tragic accident. And truly, I'm glad it wasn't a sexual harassment, because most of the books I read of girls who is scared of something experienced the feeling of sexual harassment. I'm kind of getting tired of those. 


Roger Sullivan - Ay. He is so cute. His name was the one name I got stuck on. Cuz I was like what kind of name is Roger? Forreal tho. I thought it was sounded like a dog's name. You know, Roger, the dog? Or like, that radio walkie-talkie thing, which I still don't understand what it's supposed to mean. Like Roger that. Or Roger over. Maybe it means I understand. BUT NOW, after I finished reading the book....you know what....WHO CARES? He is amazing~


Gosh. I swear I sound so scary. Like. I don't even know him. He's not even alive. And I truly cannot imagine liking a 19-year-old guy. But he was so romantic and caring in the book. OH. Totally worth fangurling over. I swear. Amy is so lucky. I'm not jealous tho. CUZ I TOTALLY SHIP THEM. Ouu. Totes. 


I finally can see what the reviewers of this are all raving about. And yannoe, I was never big about road trips. But this one tho. Swerve. I'm reading more road trip novels from now on. I feel like I'm talking too ghetto over here. Hope no one's offended. Welps. Continuing on.

Even though this book, I've decided, is to be one of my summer reads and I rave all about them and move on to the next, I've gone a bit crazy raving this book. I went went on Goodreads and recommended it to most of my friends who liked "romance". Oh. Hope they took that advice well. Haha. 

Either way, throughout the book, Roger and Amy's chemistry totally took my attention. I swear t.5hose are some awesome detours they took. And I just totally love how Roger is 19 and Amy is 17. Two-year-apart romances are the best! Fooreaal. Although 19 and 17 is the age where the guy just went to college so it never works out in a high school environment. :)

  I'm not really into men without close on. I mean, that really wasn't what caught my attention of the book, so I assume that is a good thing. But hey, the title is great. It's so cheesy. At times, I would randomly read cheesy books and not hate it. Maybe I read those action and suspenseful novels a lot, but cheesy books are fun to read sometimes.

The Characters/ My Opinions:

Hannah - Hannah, the main character was pretty good, I guess. She wasn't super annoying but she also didn't have a huge, unique personality. I guess since this was one of my cheesy reads, I don't connect to the characters as well as dystopian ones. Contemporary reads are like my breath of fresh air. They;'re actually really fun to read once, enjoy the plot, and move on. I really like reading those books once in a while.

Jack Colt - His name reminds me of a horse so much. LOL. But you can guess what role he plays in this story. The one who plays around with lots of girls. But also has a secret behind him, hidden. And Hannah would be the one finding that secret...etc. I read a lot of books with that concept, but each has different writing styles and a few twists there. So I really don't mind reading contemporary reads once in a while.

I actually liked the beginning. I mean, there are some boring contemporary books. But the beginning kind of just pulled me in. And I started from there and finished the book. The book wasn't that long, but at least it wasn't so boring I had to it down like 14 times and have to force myself to finish the book. So yeah, I really liked how it had a hook in the beginning.

The book started with action. The teaser part already took place, except the Jack Colt part, but the MIA dad already took place. Yep. I love books like that. Fast action. And getting to the point.

Final Thoughts:

Sorry, this post came late, but I really did enjoy the book. :D If you guys like some cheesy title, contemporary read, here's one for you~

At a Glance/The Cover:

Since everyone was raving about Jennifer Echols' books, I decided to give it a try. This book was the first one that came up, so I just decided to get it. No regrets. :D Isn't that a band. Haha. Moving on. 

My first impression was 'ugh, adult books. No' But then I found out they were surprisingly cute. Normally, I don't like to read about couples who had a job, a house, and all that. But in Star Crossed, it was the cool job they had that had brought together, so.....am I starting to change my mind?

I normally really dislike adult books. Because of all the erotica scenes and all. But Jennifer Echols managed to do a hot, spicy romance without a body interaction scene at all.  I must say....#impressed. 

The Characters/Summaries:

Wendy Mann - Being one of the narrator of the book, I must say, I really enjoyed reading about Wendy's work life. She seems that she had established some awesome relationships with her co-workers and they're really funny. Another thing I like about this book. I really enjoy some comedy romance. ;D 

Wendy also seems like a tough girl. She can stand up by herself, yet she still can fit a man in her life. Overall, gee. She's just so cute with Daniel. I can't even say cute, since they are way older than me. I just realized. They're my brother's age. Omfg. Btw, my brother is like 14 years older than me, so.....I'm not that old. LOL.

Daniel - Okay. This thing about me, I need guys to be hot and sexy and awesome like that just because they can. Daniel certainly isn't flawed. At all. But I didn't like him that much because of his sexiness and hotness. I really liked his personality. He's funny, charming, witty. Just what you expect from a celebrity helper person. 

Another reason I really like this book is the whole celebrity thing. I mean, despite trying not to be a crazy fangirl over celebrities.....can't help it. :D I just really love celebrity things. I don't even know why. Something to do with fame, drama, and romance just makes the best novel......but of course, that quiet summer getaway with a cute boy neighbor is also another great story line.

Final Thoughts:

Hehe. Read. Read. Read. Yeah. If you just love whatever I typed up there, have reading! Cuz I'll bet you'll just enjoy this book, just as much as I do.

At a Glance/The Cover:

Instead of looking at it before I read the book, I'll just give you a short skim on all three. Before. During. After. So before, I was really excited. Cuz from the blurb, the book sounds so cute. And I LOVE LOVE LURVE YA romance. Like they are just so kawaii. I can't believe I'm so asain. I don't even use that word. Omg. I can't. *squeals. LOL. K. So that cover is so I just can't help but fangurling. Cuz it's so cute. Hot. Whatever you can to describe it. asdfjkl;asdfjkl; ....no words. I just really like those covers. Haha. And like I went to heaven and said hi to the prince up there when I found the book.

"Need rescuing"

Ohmergerd. This like the first page, but I can just tell he's hot.

During. In the beginning half. I was entertained till I ran out of my house. Okay. That never happened. But Huntley Fitzpatrick is just so funny. Ohmygawd. She's like HILARIOUS. George. Ermergerd. Yeah. And even Samantha was funny. And like, it was ALL about their romance. No other problems. Just them. Being their cute self. Cute couple. I just ship themk so so mucho.

"I might marry you. Do you want a big family."

 I swear. George is like the funniest little kid ever. This statement is so ironic. LOL. 

In the middle, near the end was when things got more serious. When 'drama' happened. And the 'relationship crisis' happened. And i cried. yeah. I really cried there. I kept hoping that this wasn't a series, cuz I really want them back together again. And btw, this 'drama' isn't the relationship drama. It's something else entirely so don't worry about dramatic crying girls. I actually wouldn't over something like that. That's dramatic *rolls eyes. I'm talking about the family changing kinds........

"George, it's usually better to discuss this kind of thing with your pants on."

 It was about the big family comment. Haha.

Thank god this wasn't a series. Because I swear I would have died to wait a year that's usually how long a book takes to come out unless you're super amazing like Abbi Glines and she can finish a book in like literally three months. Printed and all. Like omg.  Luckily for me, it ended at the end of the book. Happy I guess. But I find it kind of rushed. Like I wanted more of the Sam and Jase time. Especially in the end. 

"Then you could live in here with him. And have a big family."

George and his big family thing. *shakes head

Ermmm...okay. I basically did all three parts of the review. So I'll just try to fill in my missing parts.

"His bed's really comfortable. And he never pees in it...."

Omg. More of George. He's really making me laugh my head off. 

Samantha Reed - Her mother. A Senator, who cares about politics and just politics. No time for Sam. Or Tracey. Only ground rules. "Don't you dare to date" And "No associating with the Garretts" Samantha. Good girl. Always follow mother's instructions. Yes. That is till somebody climbed up her window. So adorably cute there. ;D And secretly, Samantha begins to see the Garrets. Know the Garrets. And kind of be their neighbor.

"Voldemort the corn snake with the shoe fetish."

Okay. This was just super random. But it would be definitely something I might say to a friend. Yeah. I'm random.

Assuming you guys got lots of information from the blurb, I might as well not mention Garrett is a huge family etc... right? K. Moving on.

"Is that what they call it now?"

You just need to read the book understand this. ;') Dying. Omg.

Jason Garrett - Full name. I prefer him as Jase. Okay. The book. The blurb makes him seem average. The book makes him seem average. But when you read it. And pretend to be Samantha. He's like freakin perfect. Omg. They say he's not as jock as his brother. Yet. He trains and conditions to be in the football team. He's average compared to Alice and Joel The jock and queen of family. They attract, let's say, many hot beings. But like HE's FREAKIN' PERFECT. Excuse me for my language here. But I find it hard not to use those words and not express how I feel. KK. Yep. I think you guys get the idea.

" 'Me neither.' George jabs a finger at his own bare chest. 'We match.' "

Okay. Can you imagine now. What just happened? Haha. Hint: They are in Jase's room. *wiggles eyebrows

Okay. There are like so much more important people. I'll just give you  some base names. Tracey Reed is Sam's older sister. Who also has the looks. And the guy. 

"I wake to Jase shaking my shoulders."

This is just too cute. Gah. If only you read this book, guys.

Clary Tucker. Ugh. That. Bastard. I hope bastard isn't a bad word anymore. Cuz no one uses. I only see it in dramas, when they're translating from Korean. Yeah. I wanted to murder him. Throw him in cow poo. Omg. I think he's selfish.

"You'll be needing that stupid Breakfast Ahoy scarf to cover that hickey right there."

Grace Reed. The mother. Even it was the mom who caused the 'incident', I find it more of Clary's fault. So I can't blame the mom. Although I did near the middle. For siding with Clary. But. In the end. *sighs. She's ended up being a mother. It's a good thing guys~ 

"Being a politician is a lot like being an alcoholic in denial."

I think this was the only deep meaning quote I shared, but wow. If you think about it....

Final Thoughts:

Okay. So final thoughts. Umm. ATTENTION! IF YOU ARE A YOUNG ADULT FAN, YOU MUST, I REPEAT, MUST READ THIS AMAZING BOOK. OMG. YOU'RE GONNA DIE. YEAH. DEFINITELY READ IT BEFORE YOU DIE. BECAUSE I DON'T WANT YOU TO MISS OUT ON THIS WONDERFULLY WRITTEN, ATTENTION WREATHING NOVEL. READ IT. LOVE IT. SHARE IT. ;D Where the heck did that come from?
